Rethinking Pearls

How to Wear Pearls Every Day Without Looking Too Formal

When I was in my twenties, I wasn't particularly drawn to pearls.

To me, pearls always felt a little too mature and traditional. I associated them with formal occasions, and sometimes I worried that wearing pearls would make an outfit feel overdressed.

Then, while I was in grad school, something changed the way I saw them.

I went to a party one day and noticed a girl wearing something incredibly simple: a white T-shirt, jeans, and a very delicate baroque pearl necklace.

I remember looking at her for quite a while.

Her outfit was completely casual, but the necklace gave her this subtle, unexpected elegance. She didn't look dressed up at all. Instead, the pearls somehow made the simple outfit feel more interesting and more like her.

That was the first time I really realized that pearls could have so many different personalities.

They didn't have to be reserved for weddings, dinners, or special occasions. They could be casual. They could be modern. They could feel effortless.

That moment stayed with me.

And years later, it has become part of the way I think about jewelry—and one of the reasons I love working with pearls today.

I no longer think about whether an occasion is formal enough for pearls. I think more about whether they feel right with what I'm wearing and, more importantly, whether they feel like me.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to wear pearls in everyday life.

1. Pair Pearls With Denim

One of the easiest ways to make pearls feel less traditional is to wear them with something casual.

Think your favorite jeans, a simple shirt, and a delicate pearl necklace.

The contrast is what makes it work. The relaxed feel of denim balances the natural elegance of pearls, creating an outfit that feels polished without looking dressed up.

You don't need a statement necklace, either. A small freshwater pearl necklace can be enough to add a soft, feminine detail to an otherwise very simple outfit.

It's one of those combinations that looks effortless—but still feels special.

2. Let a Simple T-Shirt Do the Work

A white or black T-shirt is one of my favorite pieces to wear with pearls.

There's something about the simplicity of a T-shirt that makes the pearls stand out in a very natural way.

Instead of thinking of the pearl necklace as the "dressy" part of the outfit, think of it as the finishing detail.

T-shirt + jeans + pearls.

That's it.

Sometimes the simplest combinations are the ones I wear the most.

And I think this is what that girl at the party taught me without ever knowing it: you don't need a complicated outfit to make pearls feel special.

3. Mix Pearls With Minimal Jewelry

You don't have to wear pearls from head to toe.

In fact, I usually prefer mixing one pearl piece with simple jewelry rather than wearing a matching pearl set.

Try a pearl necklace with a thin gold chain, or small pearl earrings with your everyday hoops.

The combination feels more personal and less "perfect"—which is exactly what makes it feel modern.

I love jewelry that looks like it naturally belongs with the pieces you already wear.

4. Keep the Rest Simple

Pearls already have a beautiful presence, so you don't need to overthink the rest of your outfit.

If you're wearing a more noticeable pearl necklace, keep your clothing simple.

If you're wearing small pearl earrings, let them quietly complement the rest of your look.

For me, everyday jewelry is less about making a statement and more about adding a little something to an outfit.

A detail you notice when you look in the mirror—but that never feels like it's trying too hard.

Pearls Don't Have to Wait for a Special Occasion

Maybe that's what I love most about pearls now.

They have a history of feeling elegant and timeless, but they can still fit naturally into everyday life.

You don't need a special occasion to wear something beautiful.

Wear your pearls with your favorite jeans. Wear them to coffee. Wear them with a sweater on an ordinary morning.

Because the best jewelry isn't necessarily the jewelry you save for later.

It's the jewelry that becomes part of your everyday life.

And maybe that's what makes it truly yours.
